Sound & Recording
My recordings are created with a simple goal: to capture the emotional presence of solo acoustic guitar.
Rather than building productions layer by layer, I record each piece as a live performance. This preserves the pacing, resonance, and subtle dynamics that emerge in real time.
I'm interested in sound that feels "in the room" - warm, direct, and personal.
Recording Approach
Most pieces begin as improvisations and are recorded in a single complete take.
I do not overdub parts or assemble performances from multiple takes. Small imperfections are part of the musical moment, and I prefer honesty of expression over technical perfection.
Although the performances are recorded digitally using a direct signal path rather than microphones, I aim to shape the sound so it retains warmth, depth, and a natural sense of presence.
After recording, I may apply light compression, EQ, or ambience to support clarity and depth, but the goal is always to retain the feel of a live acoustic performance.
Guitar
Zager ZAD80CE OM-size acoustic guitar:
- Solid cedar top with rosewood back and sides
- Fishman Presys+ pickup system
I favor instruments that respond quickly to touch and produce a warm, rounded tone suitable for melodic solo playing.
Amplification and Effects
- Fishman Loudbox Artist amplifier
- VSN Tremolo pedal
- Electro-Harmonix Pico 360+ looper (used occasionally)
Effects are used sparingly - mainly to add subtle movement or space rather than to transform the core guitar sound.
Recording Environment
All recordings are made in a home studio setting in the Pacific Northwest.
Quiet spaces and relaxed performance conditions help the music unfold organically.
The goal throughout is not polish, but presence - to let the listener feel as though the guitar is being played just a few feet away.
